CQI frequently uses Magnetic Particle Testing (MPT) as one of our main non-destructive testing methods. It is used for detecting cracks and other discontinuities at or near the surface of ferromagnetic materials. It is particularly useful for preventative maintenance inspections. When magnetic particles are applied over the discontinuous area while the magnetic field is applied, the particles will be held in place identifying the discontinuity.
MPT may be applied to raw, semi-finished, finished materials and welds. It is suitable to be applied when:

• Portability of the test is a factor
• Detecting near surface type discontinuities
• Inspecting localized areas (such as welds) on miscellaneous parts and large surface areas
• Examining rough surfaces
• Locating discontinuities in any direction
• Testing over most non-conductive coatings (up to 0.05mm)
• Testing in extreme environmental conditions (both cold and hot)
• Detecting potential discontinuities that are difficult to detect (arc strikes, fatigue cracks, cracks in pin, etc.)

Applicable products to test are:

• Buildings
• Bridges
• Industrial Structures
• Machinery
• Cranes
• Rail & Road Vehicles
• Ships & Floating Marine Structures
• Mobile Drilling Units
• Industrial Pipe
• Pipelines & Piping
• Pressure Vessels
• Boilers
• Heat Exchangers
• Tanks

CQI we reference ASTM E709, ASTM E1444, CSA W59, AWS D1.1, ASME BPVC Section V and others as specified by the contract documents or specific design and construction standards.
